US-China relations were placed at the centre of international attention after Chinese President Xi Jinping said he was “happy” to welcome US President Donald Trump during their high-level meeting.
Xi stressed that despite differences, the two superpowers should act as “partners, not rivals”, describing the global situation as a “crossroads”.
Call for partnership in US-China relations
Speaking during the summit, Xi Jinping said cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both countries.
“We should be partners, not opponents,” he said, adding that China and the United States should support each other to achieve shared prosperity and build a new path of understanding between major powers.
He also noted that the world is currently at a critical turning point.
Trump signals optimism for future ties
US President Donald Trump responded positively, saying he looked forward to a “wonderful future” in US-China relations as the summit began amid ongoing disputes and global tensions.
“It is an honour to be with you. It is an honour to be your friend,” Trump said, adding that relations between China and the United States “will be better than ever”.
He expressed confidence that both countries could build a strong and cooperative future together.
