American oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller became the world’s first billionaire in 1916, marking a landmark moment in the history of American business and wealth.
Rockefeller built his fortune through Standard Oil, the company he co-founded in 1870. The business grew rapidly and became one of the most powerful oil companies in the United States, dominating much of the country’s petroleum industry.
From oil refining to a vast fortune
Born in New York in 1839, Rockefeller entered the oil business in the early days of the US petroleum industry. He helped establish Standard Oil and developed an extensive network of refineries, pipelines and distribution operations.
His business practices made him one of the most influential and controversial industrialists of the Gilded Age. Standard Oil’s dominance eventually led to a major antitrust case, and in 1911 the US Supreme Court ordered the company to be broken up into smaller businesses.
By 1916, however, Rockefeller’s personal fortune had continued to grow. His holdings in oil companies and other investments made him the first person in history to be recognised as a billionaire.
A fortune that changed American philanthropy
Rockefeller did not only accumulate wealth. He also became one of America’s most prominent philanthropists, donating large sums to education, medicine, scientific research and public health.
He established the Rockefeller Foundation in 1913, which supported projects around the world, including efforts to combat disease and improve public health.
Rockefeller died in 1937 at the age of 97. His wealth and philanthropic legacy continued to influence American institutions long after his death.
The rise of Rockefeller’s fortune in 1916 reflected the enormous economic power created by America’s rapidly expanding oil industry and marked the beginning of the billionaire era.
