Woman threatened inside her home
A 69-year-old woman in Nicosia allegedly endured a terrifying ordeal after a 24-year-old man entered her home and threatened her in an attempt to extort money.
According to reports, the incident began on May 15 when the suspect allegedly demanded cash from the woman while threatening to harm her son if she refused. Fearing for her son’s safety, the woman handed over €200.
Suspect allegedly forced woman to ATM
The following day, the 24-year-old reportedly returned to the woman’s house demanding more money.
The woman attempted to contact her son, however the suspect allegedly prevented her from doing so and forced her into his vehicle under threats so they could travel to an ATM.
At the cash machine, the suspect allegedly attempted to withdraw money using the woman’s bank card. However, the withdrawal failed because there were insufficient funds in the account.
Police arrest second suspect
Cyprus Police later arrested a 40-year-old man who is also believed to have played a role in the case.
According to information obtained by investigators, both suspects reportedly knew the woman’s son, although no prior complaint involving the individuals had been filed with authorities.
Investigation into multiple offences
The two suspects were arrested and remain in custody.
Authorities are investigating offences including abduction, deprivation of liberty, extortion through threats, theft and other related crimes.
