The renewal of vehicle licenses for 2025 begins today.
According to the Road Transport Department (TOM), the final day for renewal is Tuesday, 11 March 2025, at midnight.
Transport, Communications and Works Minister Alexis Vafeadis stated on Saturday that the Ministry is preparing decrees concerning vehicle recalls following issues with faulty Takata airbags. These decrees are set to be submitted next week to the Legal Service for review.
Regarding MOT inspections and vehicle license renewals, the Minister noted that vehicles identified for recalls on the TOM’s website (e.g., Mazda Demio, Honda, and others) are not currently restricted from undergoing MOT inspections, as handling procedures for these cases have yet to be decided.
However, for another category of recalled vehicles, mainly of European origin, whose distributors have repeatedly notified owners to bring them in for recalls without success, license renewal will only be possible after the recall process is completed.
According to a TOM announcement, vehicle licenses can be renewed for periods of three, six, nine, or twelve months. Renewals made after Tuesday, 11 March 2025, will incur a surcharge of €10 plus 10% of the annual license fee.
To renew a vehicle license, a roadworthiness certificate and insurance are required.
The TOM advises the public to renew their licenses early to avoid potential system overload, which could cause delays.
Owners who renewed their 2024 license but do not intend to renew for 2025 must notify the RTD of the vehicle’s immobilisation. This can be done online via the TOM website (Road Transport Department (https://rtd.mcw.gov.cy)). Failure to do so will result in continued liability for license fees.
Vehicles that have not had their 2024 license renewed and are not declared immobilised will be removed from the TOM register if fees for 2024 are not paid and the 2025 license is not renewed by Tuesday, 11 March 2025.
In cases where a vehicle is destroyed, owners must submit an application to the TOM to cancel its registration (form TOM 98A) along with a “Certificate of Destruction” issued by licensed waste treatment facilities to avoid further liability for license fees from the destruction date.
Vehicle licenses can be renewed online throughout the year, except for embassy vehicles, private buses for large families, quarry vehicles, vintage vehicles (paying €25), UN vehicles, and vehicles belonging to other organisations with exemption code 04. Owners of these vehicles must visit TOM offices to pay the fees.
No reminders for license renewal will be sent to vehicle owners. Owners must update their contact information in the TOM register to receive important notifications, such as recall notices, about their vehicles.
