US may use UK base in Cyprus amid Iran tension

Date:

The US may use UK base in Cyprus as part of potential military operations in support of Israel, should tensions with Iran escalate further, according to a report by Sky News.

While no formal request has been confirmed, sources indicate the Pentagon is considering deploying American refuelling aircraft to the British base at Akrotiri. This would significantly expand the US military footprint in the region, as president Donald Trump is reportedly evaluating possible US involvement in the conflict.

The report also notes the deployment of B-52 bombers and other fighter aircraft to Diego Garcia- another UK-controlled base in the Indian Ocean. However, there are currently no plans to send B-2 stealth bombers capable of targeting Iran’s underground nuclear sites, such as Fordow.

Use of any UK base, including Akrotiri, for offensive operations requires British government approval. It remains unclear whether such authorisation has been requested or granted.

British forces stationed in Iraq, Bahrain, and Cyprus are already on alert. The UK has also increased its presence in Cyprus to 14 Typhoon jets, supported by two additional refuelling aircraft.

The US may use UK base in Cyprus not only to support Israeli forces, but also to strengthen defensive positioning against a potential Iranian strike. An American aircraft carrier is expected to arrive in the region within days, adding to the growing international build-up.
