The United States and Cyprus are looking to strengthen their bilateral relations, new US Ambassador to Cyprus John Breslow said on Monday during a meeting with House Speaker Annita Demetriou at the House of Representatives.
Breslow said US President Donald Trump had tasked him with ensuring that the United States became safer, stronger and more prosperous, adding that cooperation with Cyprus could benefit both countries.
“I believe that if we can do that together, Cyprus is one of the best partners we have,” he said, expressing his willingness to discuss a range of issues with Demetriou.
Strategic partnership amid regional challenges
Breslow highlighted Cyprus’ strategic location, describing the island as being in a particularly important neighbourhood.
“We certainly hope to continue our relationship and strengthen it,” he said.
Demetriou welcomed the ambassador, expressing confidence that the two countries would continue to develop their cooperation.
She said consensus and a common approach were particularly important given current developments and the challenges ahead.
“It is really important, especially now with everything we are hearing, to have this consensus and common line that is absolutely necessary to see how we will address all the challenges ahead, in accordance with our rules and principles,” she said.
