Iran reacts in desperation, says Israeli UN ambassador Danny Danon

Date:

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said on Monday that Iran’s leadership is “lashing out in desperation” following what he called decisive and surgical US-Israeli strikes.

Danon told reporters in New York that Israel and the United States “will not stop” operations against Iran until their objectives are achieved.

“We will do whatever is necessary to make sure Iran doesn’t have nuclear capabilities,” Danon said, adding that Israel will act to protect its people and borders.

Despite casualties among civilians, including Israeli citizens, Danon framed the losses as part of a necessary “sacrifice” for future generations. He expressed hope for a leadership change in Tehran, stating that freedom for the Iranian people “will come sooner than later.”

US defense stance

Three days into the US-Israel air campaign on Iran, Pete Hegseth addressed reporters, saying, “we didn’t start this war but under President Trump we are finishing it.”

Hegseth emphasised that the operation is “not a so-called regime change war” and did not specify a timeline, leaving open the possibility of US ground troops. He described the campaign’s goals as realistic: destroying Iran’s military power and ending its nuclear program.

“Our objectives are clear: to crush Iran’s military capabilities and prevent nuclear development,” Hegseth said.

Both Israeli and US officials maintain that their actions are part of a broader strategy to ensure security in the region and prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while signaling readiness to escalate if necessary.
