Ukrainian drones struck energy and military-related targets in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday morning, coinciding with the opening day of the city’s major economic forum, according to Russian and Ukrainian officials.
The Saint Petersburg drone attack comes as thousands of international delegates gather for the annual economic event, which is expected to host around 20,000 participants from 130 countries.
Economic forum continues under security concerns
The forum, which runs for three days, has traditionally served as a key platform for Russia to attract foreign investment and business interest.
Despite the reported strikes, organisers said the event continued, with heightened security measures in place.
Russian authorities confirm damage
Saint Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said several infrastructure sites were damaged, although no casualties were reported.
He added that air defence systems were activated and intercepted multiple drones during the overnight attacks.
Ukrainian statements on targets
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces carried out strikes on a major oil terminal in Saint Petersburg, as well as other military-related facilities.
He said the operations were part of what Kyiv describes as “long-range sanctions” aimed at reducing Russia’s military capacity.
Flights disrupted and air defences activated
Local authorities reported the temporary suspension of operations at Saint Petersburg’s main airport due to drone activity.
Russian officials said air defence systems downed dozens of drones during the incident.
Ongoing escalation
The Saint Petersburg drone attack is the latest in a series of cross-border strikes between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides continuing to target strategic infrastructure.
Officials on both sides have linked such operations to broader battlefield developments and ongoing hostilities.
