Two men found dead in Limassol flat with charcoal grill indoors

Date:

Another tragic incident has unfolded in Limassol, where two men were found dead in an apartment in the Episkopi area early Wednesday morning. According to reports from the Cyprus Police initial investigations suggest that the men may have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from a charcoal grill found at the scene.

Discovery of the bodies

Authorities were alerted to the apartment after concerns were raised about the individuals inside. Upon arrival, police discovered the lifeless bodies of two men, believed to be in their 40s and of foreign nationality. No immediate signs of violence were observed, leading investigators to consider accidental poisoning as a probable cause of death.

Charcoal grill as a potential cause

Inside the apartment, officers found a lit ‘foukou’—a traditional Cypriot charcoal grill—raising suspicions that the men may have used it as a heating source due to cold weather conditions. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a known hazard associated with indoor use of such grills, as the toxic fumes can be fatal in enclosed spaces with insufficient ventilation.

Police investigation and autopsy results pending

The police have launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths. Autopsies are expected to confirm whether carbon monoxide inhalation was the definitive cause, though authorities are also considering other possible factors, including substance consumption or pre-existing health conditions.

Authorities urge public awareness

Following the incident, local authorities have issued renewed warnings about the dangers of using charcoal grills or other open-flame heating devices indoors. The Cyprus Fire Service and health officials stress the importance of proper ventilation and the risks of carbon monoxide exposure, especially during the colder months.

As investigations continue, more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. This horrific house fire event follows the tragic death of a five-member family in Limassol last week, a death of a young man earlier this week, and another incident that left an individual injured from trying to escape the fire.
