Fire Service on alert after chimney fires
House fires in Cyprus prompted an emergency response from the Cyprus Fire Service after two separate incidents involving faulty fireplace chimneys were reported within hours.
Between 06:00 on January 19 and 06:00 on January 20, 2026, the Fire Service responded to a total of 28 calls for assistance. These included 14 fires, 13 special service incidents and one false alarm.
Roof fire in Kato Lefkara
At 18:54, a call was received reporting a roof fire at a residence in Kato Lefkara, in the Larnaca district. Three fire engines responded from the Vasiliko, Lefkara and EMAK fire stations.
The fire was brought under control by 19:32. The female occupant of the house safely evacuated the premises and did not sustain any injuries. According to authorities, the fire was caused by a defective fireplace chimney.
Second incident in Akaki
Later the same evening, at 21:04, a second call was received for a roof fire at a house in Akaki, in the Nicosia district. Two fire engines from the Lakatamia Fire Station attended the scene.
The fire was contained by 22:28. All occupants exited the house safely, with no injuries reported. Investigations confirmed that this fire was also caused by a faulty chimney connected to a fireplace.

The Fire Service once again urges the public to ensure that fireplace chimneys are properly maintained and regularly inspected, particularly during periods of increased fireplace use.
