Turkey is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the occupation regime on Friday for the construction of a natural gas pipeline.
The agreement is expected to be signed during an official visit to the occupied areas by Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, in the presence of Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.
According to Turkish media reports, the Turkey gas pipeline project would connect the country with the occupied areas of Cyprus and strengthen cooperation between the two sides in the energy sector.
Series of meetings in occupied areas
Yilmaz will also be accompanied by Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli.
The visit will begin at the illegal Tymbou airport, also known as Ercan, where a ceremony will be held for the delivery of a firefighting helicopter to the occupation regime.
A joint press conference with the so-called “prime minister”, Unal Ustel, will follow.
During his visit to the occupied areas, the Turkish vice president will also meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
He is expected to inspect the completed cold-storage facilities in Morphou and visit the city’s new municipal building.
Energy links between Turkey and occupied areas
The planned signing of the memorandum for the Turkey gas pipeline forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure links between Turkey and the occupied areas.
The project follows the construction of the pipeline carrying water from Turkey to the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.
