Trump: Europe must act against “out-of-control” migration

Date:

Returning to rhetorical themes he has consistently repeated since his return to power in January, US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Europe should take action against what he described as “out-of-control” migration, warning that this should happen “before it is too late”.

Trump claimed that, as the world could now see, uncontrolled migration leads to chaos, dysfunction, and unrest. He argued that this was also happening in many European countries and advised that it would be wise for Europe to act before the situation worsens. His comments were made during a speech at a military base and were linked to recent clashes in Los Angeles between law enforcement and demonstrators opposing his immigration policies, particularly the raids aimed at detaining and deporting undocumented migrants.

He reiterated his stance by saying that, although some disliked hearing it, he would continue to say it clearly and loudly: Europe should act promptly before it becomes too late. He made these remarks in front of uniformed soldiers wearing red berets.

The White House has increasingly framed its crackdown on undocumented migration as a battle for “civilisation”, adopting rhetoric that has alarmed civil and political rights advocates as well as anti-racism campaigners.

Earlier this year, US Vice President J.D. Vance delivered a notably sharp verbal attack on European governments during a high-profile speech at the Munich Security Conference in February, where he claimed that no issue was more urgent for the European continent than irregular migration.

The White House has also publicly voiced support for far-right parties and leaders across Europe, ranging from Marine Le Pen to Germany’s AfD party.
