The Pyla buffer zone was calm on Wednesday morning with no clashes reported, according to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which said peacekeepers have increased patrols following recent developments in the area.
No clashes reported in Pyla area
UNFICYP spokesperson Aleem Siddique confirmed that the Pyla buffer zone remained peaceful, despite earlier reports suggesting tensions in the area.
He stressed that there were no clashes and that the situation was stable, following concerns raised after the reported presence of unauthorised security personnel.
Increased UN patrols in buffer zone
The Pyla buffer zone has seen heightened UNFICYP patrols and a visible peacekeeping presence on the ground.
According to the mission, these measures were introduced after the observation of unauthorised entry by Turkish Cypriot security personnel into the UN-controlled area.
Call for calm and restraint
UNFICYP’s Special Representative and Head of Mission Khassim Diagne has called for calm and restraint in Pyla, urging all sides to respect the mandate of the peacekeeping force.
The mission reiterated that stability in the UN buffer zone remains its top priority.
Cooperation with all sides
UNFICYP said it is actively engaging with all involved parties to restore the pre-existing status quo and prevent any actions that could undermine peace and stability in the region.
It also emphasised that any unauthorised entry or activity within the UN buffer zone constitutes a violation of its mandate.
Buffer zone stability a key priority
The peacekeeping force underlined that respect for UNFICYP’s mandate is essential for maintaining stability in the sensitive area.
The situation in the Pyla buffer zone remains under close monitoring as peacekeepers continue operations on the ground.
