Limassol: How the wild chase of two Turkish Cypriots unfolded

Date:

Two Turkish Cypriot men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested by police in Limassol on Thursday following a vehicle chase involving a series of traffic and criminal offences.

Vehicle allegedly driven dangerously

At around 10:40 am, members of the Bicycle Police were conducting traffic checks in an area of Limassol when they attempted to stop a vehicle that had no registration plate on the front.

The driver initially complied with the police signal but then accelerated towards the officers, putting them at risk.

He subsequently continued driving recklessly and dangerously, failing to stop at junctions, running traffic lights and ignoring other traffic signs. The vehicle also collided with parked cars.

During the attempt to stop the vehicle, police officers fired warning shots. The driver initially brought the vehicle to a halt but then accelerated again, allegedly directing it towards the officers and putting them in danger.

Objects thrown at police vehicles

The driver continued on his way during the chase, while both he and the passenger allegedly threw various objects at the police vehicles following them.

The objects caused damage to the windscreen of a police vehicle.

The chase ended when the vehicle collided with a traffic light and came to a stop. As police officers approached, the two occupants allegedly attacked them, resulting in their arrest for offences committed in the act.

A search that followed found a knife in the possession of the 19-year-old driver, who was also arrested on suspicion of carrying a knife.

Two officers injured

The two suspects remain in custody as the case is investigated and are expected to appear before the Limassol District Court on Saturday, where police will seek a remand order.

Two police officers were injured during the chase and taken to Limassol General Hospital. They received first aid and were later discharged.

The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) and Limassol Traffic Police are continuing their investigations.
