The idea of reviving the Olympic Games had been championed by Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator who believed sport could promote peace and understanding among nations. With Greece chosen as the host, the Games carried both symbolic and historical weight.

A modest beginning with lasting impact

The first modern Olympics were far smaller than today’s global spectacle. Just 14 nations took part, with around 240 athletes competing across 43 events. There were no women participants, and most athletes were amateurs.

Despite their scale, the Games captured the imagination of spectators. The United States won the most gold medals, while Greece claimed the highest overall medal count, fueling national pride in the host country.

The marathon that defined the Games

One of the most iconic moments came from the marathon, a race inspired by the legend of Pheidippides. Greek runner Spyridon Louis won the event, becoming a national hero overnight.

His victory electrified the crowd and reinforced the emotional connection between ancient Greek heritage and the modern revival of the Games.

More than sport: a global idea is born

The success of the Athens Games proved that the Olympic vision could work. What began as a modest international gathering laid the foundation for a global movement promoting competition, unity and cultural exchange.

Over time, the Olympics would grow into one of the world’s most watched events, evolving to include thousands of athletes, new sports and a strong emphasis on inclusion, far from its humble beginnings in 1896.

A legacy that still resonates today

Today, the legacy of the first modern Olympics remains deeply relevant. The ideals of fair play, international cooperation and respect continue to define the Games, even as they adapt to modern challenges.

Athens 1896 was more than a sporting event- it was the start of a tradition that continues to bring nations together, reminding the world of the enduring power of sport.
