Trump calls it “ridiculous” that the US continues to support NATO

Date:

US President Donald Trump has described the United States’ relationship with NATO as “ridiculous”, arguing that the arrangement remains one-sided.

His comments came in a post on Truth Social on Thursday night, ahead of an upcoming NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara, Turkey.

Claims of unequal burden-sharing

Trump said the US continues to shoulder an “unbalanced” burden within the alliance, claiming there is insufficient reciprocity from other member states.

He wrote that NATO members “were not there for us”, repeating longstanding criticism he has made towards European allies over defence spending and military commitments.

Renewed tensions ahead of summit

The remarks come just days before leaders of the alliance are expected to gather for the NATO summit in Ankara.

Trump has repeatedly criticised European allies over defence cooperation, particularly during previous geopolitical crises and military conflicts involving US-led coalitions.

His latest comments are expected to reignite debate over burden-sharing within the alliance.
