Tragedy in Paphos: Woodpile collapse kills 34-year-old

A 34-year-old man lost his life in a workplace accident on Wednesday afternoon in Paphos. The victim has been identified as Aldahdouh Housain, a Syrian national and permanent resident of Paphos, who was also an asylum seeker, according to police reports.

Fatal accident at construction site

The tragic incident occurred at a construction site near Saint George’s Church in Peyia around 16:30. According to police, the victim was working at the site and walking beneath a forklift that was elevating a large pile of wood. At that moment, the strap securing the wood snapped, causing the heavy pile to fall onto Housain, fatally injuring him.

Two arrests made

Following the accident, police arrested two individuals- a 64-year-old forklift operator and a 45-year-old contractor- to assist in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are now working to determine the cause of the strap failure and whether proper safety measures were followed at the construction site.

The investigation remains active as authorities seek to establish the events leading up to the fatal accident, including potential negligence or safety violations.
