Tragedy in Cyprus: Homeless woman dies alone holding food voucher

Date:

A homeless woman was found dead on a bench outside a supermarket in Cyprus, holding a food voucher she did not manage to redeem, a case that has intensified concerns over elderly poverty in Cyprus and social protection gaps.

The incident was brought to public attention by actor Kostas Vichas.

Calls for stronger support systems

Speaking on the programme Mesimeri kai Kati, the President of the Third Age Observatory, Dimos Antoniou, said the case reflects the urgent need for a structured protection network for the elderly and vulnerable.

He also referred to another recent case in Larnaca, where an elderly woman was found dead at home days after her passing, questioning whether this reflects the society Cyprus wants to build.

Warning over demographic pressure

Antoniou stressed that population ageing will significantly increase social and economic pressure in the coming years.

He warned that within a few years, one-third of Cyprus’ population will be over 65, placing substantial strain on healthcare services and the national health system.

He also noted that more younger workers will be needed to support each elderly person, warning of growing fiscal pressure on the state.

Call for mapping vulnerable groups

The Third Age Observatory president called for a national mapping system to identify vulnerable individuals, their needs and available support structures.

He criticised the limited staffing of welfare services, saying a small number of officers are responsible for hundreds of cases each.

He also called for greater specialisation in ageing-related social services.

“No excuses” for systemic failures

Antoniou described recent incidents as evidence of a deeper systemic problem in social care, noting that similar cases have recurred in recent months and years.

He warned that without immediate action, such incidents could become increasingly frequent.

He also highlighted the issue of age-based discrimination, stating that it is present both socially and institutionally.

Legal and policy intervention planned

He revealed that the Third Age Observatory is preparing legal actions aimed at pushing for legislative reforms.

Antoniou said the organisation aims to bring targeted court cases to create pressure for policy change, stressing that delays in addressing these issues can no longer continue.

The case has reignited public debate over elderly poverty in Cyprus, social welfare gaps and the need for stronger institutional protection for vulnerable groups.
