Israel’s Minister of Defence, Israel Katz, confirmed the death of Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian security official, following Israeli strikes overnight. Larijani served as secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and was a representative of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the council.
Political and security career
Ali Larijani was appointed SNSC secretary in August 2025 by President Masoud Pezeshkian. He previously served as speaker of Iran’s parliament for 12 years, from May 2008 to May 2020. Although he led the Principlist faction in parliament between 2008 and 2012, he was considered a “moderate conservative” in recent years.
Nuclear negotiations and advisory roles
Before his parliamentary leadership, Larijani served as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator from 2005 to 2007. Iranian outlets also described him as an adviser to the late Supreme Leader. His brother, Sadegh Larijani, chairs the Expediency Council, a top arbitration body between parliament and the Guardian Council.
Regional implications
The confirmation of Ali Larijani’s death marks a major development in Iran-Israel tensions and could have significant implications for regional security and political dynamics.
