Thunderstorms and orange warning likely as temperatures plunge

Date:

Temperatures are set to fall sharply on Saturday, 29 August, as thunderstorms and heavy rain affect several areas, with an orange weather warning considered likely due to the expected intensity of the conditions.

Senior Meteorological Officer Michalis Mouskos told the Cyprus News Agency on Friday that rain and thunderstorms are expected during the day and into the early evening on Saturday.

He said the Department of Meteorology plans to issue a warning on Friday afternoon, with a strong possibility that it will be at orange level because of the severity of the forecast weather.

Temperatures to drop sharply

The change will bring a significant drop in temperatures after Friday’s heat.

Mouskos said temperatures of around 39°C inland and 34°C along the coast on Friday are expected to fall to around 30°C on Saturday.

Temperatures will begin rising again from Sunday, gradually returning to normal seasonal levels by Tuesday, at around 36°C inland and 32°C along the coast.

Rain and hail also possible

Some instability is expected to persist over mountainous areas in the following days, with isolated rain possible on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Temporary rain and hail could also occur on Friday.

Mouskos advised motorists to exercise particular caution on the roads during Saturday’s thunderstorms and urged the public to avoid remaining outdoors while storms are under way.
