Mexico celebrations following the country’s World Cup victory over Ecuador ended in tragedy after three people died from suffocation during mass gatherings in Mexico City.
Authorities confirmed that a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man lost their lives after crowds gathered across the capital on Tuesday night.
Massive crowds gathered after historic win
According to city officials, more than one million people took to the streets, particularly around the Angel of Independence monument in central Mexico City, to celebrate Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador.
The win marked Mexico’s first progression to the World Cup knockout stages since 1986 and triggered widespread celebrations across the city.
Fireworks and large public gatherings continued long after the final whistle, with fans celebrating in streets and public spaces.
Emergency services responded across the city
Health authorities said emergency crews treated three unconscious individuals at different locations along Paseo de la Reforma before transferring them to hospital.
Officials stated that emergency personnel administered first aid and CPR before transporting the victims for specialist medical care.
However, all three were later confirmed to have died from suffocation.
Mayor expresses condolences
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged support during the coming days.
In a social media statement following the incident, she urged supporters to celebrate responsibly and with consideration for others.
Earlier in the day, Brugada had advised fans to avoid gathering near the Angel of Independence area due to the large number of people already present.
Mexico advance to last 16
Mexico’s victory secures a place in the World Cup round of 16, where the team could potentially face England should they progress in their next match.
