Holguín: UN Secretary-General reviewing next steps on Cyprus issue

Date:

UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín has outlined potential next steps aimed at encouraging both sides in the Cyprus talks to move towards concrete actions for a lasting settlement. She stressed that she remains committed to exploring every possible avenue to advance dialogue towards an agreement acceptable to all parties.

Holguín said the UN Secretary-General António Guterres is fully engaged in supporting efforts to reach a mutually beneficial solution and is considering how best to encourage progress in Cyprus talks in the coming period.

Meetings in Athens, Ankara and Cyprus

The envoy described her recent contacts in Athens and Ankara as frank and constructive, focusing on areas where cooperation is needed to build conditions for progress. She added that the European Union could play a supportive role in creating an environment conducive to a settlement.

Holguín also referenced her meetings with Cypriot leaders and political parties following the May 2026 elections, noting that discussions focused on the path forward and the importance of maintaining open communication.

Call for trust and renewed momentum

Holguín acknowledged the long-standing difficulties in building trust, saying the weight of history continues to shape perceptions on both sides. She also warned that misinformation has complicated efforts around Cyprus talks, urging a more accurate and responsible public discourse.

She emphasised that successful Cyprus talks depend on sustained political will from both leaders, supported by their communities, and encouraged all sides not to remain trapped by the past.

Broader regional perspective

The envoy highlighted Cyprus’ potential role as a regional hub for stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, noting that the island could serve as a bridge for dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

She concluded by reiterating her readiness to support renewed Cyprus talks in cooperation with the UN Secretary-General, expressing hope that Cypriots will seize what she described as a historic opportunity for a comprehensive settlement.
