Thousands of vehicles immobilised today due to Takata airbags

Date:

From Friday 3 October, thousands of vehicles have been immobilised as the suspension of roadworthiness certificates (MOT) takes effect for cars that have not replaced defective Takata airbags.

The measure applies to vehicles that exceeded the eight-month deadline set in February under Circular 8/2025. According to the Department of Road Transport (TOM), the first wave of suspensions will run from 3 to 30 October, with dates differing by car brand, based on information submitted by manufacturers.

Despite extensive public awareness campaigns, around 16,900 vehicles- 20% of the original 81,000- have still not had their airbags replaced. Toyota and Honda account for the largest share, with about 5,000 and 2,000 vehicles respectively.

Authorities have clarified that no extensions will be given for cases where owners have not booked an appointment. However, motorists who already have an appointment scheduled in October may still complete the replacement by their set date, but no later than 31 October.

The eight-month deadline was introduced as an exception to the usual 18-month framework due to the severity of the risk, with some manufacturers even issuing instructions for immediate immobilisation of affected vehicles.

TOM has urged owners facing difficulties in finding an authorised workshop or spare parts to contact its hotline for guidance. Special priority will be given to vehicles adapted for people with disabilities to ensure their mobility needs are safeguarded.

The Takata airbag recall remains the largest automotive safety recall in history, with defective inflators linked to fatal accidents worldwide.
