SYOP did not plead guilty to attempted murder of businessman

Date:

A 22-year-old man appeared today before the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court under tight security, denying charges of attempted murder against a 47-year-old businessman in Larnaca on 31 July.

Court proceedings and charges

The court set the next hearing for 18 March at 9:00 a.m. The accused faces nine charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit theft, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in two categories, and conspiracy for a subsequent attempted murder of the same individual.

Police investigation and evidence

Police arrested the young man on 17 November following a coordinated operation. Searches of his residence uncovered a 9mm pistol, ammunition, two human-shaped masks, and four mobile phones. Authorities report that the pistol has not been linked to any crime.

Investigators focused on the suspect after a tip in October indicated he admitted to a third party that he committed the attempted murder. Evidence suggests he had been following the 47-year-old for some time and occasionally changed his transport. On the day of the incident, he requested leave from work.

Forensic findings and digital evidence

During his escape attempt, a neckband fell from his clothing and was later analysed. DNA results identified the suspect. Police also found videos on his mobile phone showing him monitoring the target after the attack, marking locations and recording voice descriptions.

Details of the attempted attack

The attempted murder occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. on 31 July while the businessman cycled from the Dromolaxia Industrial Area towards Krasa. He was unharmed.
