Roads and homes flooded in Cyprus, following severe weather

Date:

Over the past 24 hours, the Fire Service responded to 16 incidents across Cyprus due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.

According to a post on X by Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the Limassol Fire Stations responded to eight incidents, including fallen trees, water pumping from basements, water removal from properties, vehicle towing, and opening stormwater drains on flooded roads. Fire Stations in Famagusta also responded to eight incidents involving water removal from house basements, clearing stormwater drains on flooded roads, and towing a vehicle.

Additionally, the Fire Service attended 50 incidents in the last 24 hours, including 17 fires and 33 special service calls. Among the most significant incidents was the response by the EMAK rescue team with climbers to assist an injured hunter in the rural area of Delikipos, in a hard-to-reach ravine. Rescuers reached the injured person, stabilised him, placed him on a rescue stretcher, and transported him over a long, rugged distance from the mountaintop to the ambulance waiting area.

There was also a response from Larnaca Firefighters with two staffed fire engines to a fire involving a commercial vehicle parked on a dead-end road in Oroklini. According to Mr Kettis, the vehicle sustained extensive damage in the fire, which also burned a small area of dry grass. The cause of the fire will be investigated later today.
