Road safety expert blames crash deaths on “zero driving culture”

Date:

Road safety advisor Andreas Papas launched a blistering attack on Monday, calling the average Cypriot driver “ignorant, clueless and stubborn”.

Speaking on Sigma TV, Papas declared the island’s road death toll a deeply political problem and accused lawmakers of failing to act.

“Higher fines for no seatbelt or mobile phone use changed nothing,” he said. “The real issue is zero road culture. Cypriots drive like they know everything and care about nothing.”

Papas cited an old survey that still perfectly describes today’s drivers and warned the 2025 death toll is already long, with December’s parties and alcohol still ahead.

Andreas Papas concluded by stressing that road safety education and culture must start first at home with the family and then at school. He proposed a full series of lessons to properly prepare young drivers for the road and responsible car use.
