Risk of of violence if buffer zone provocations persist

Date:

Tensions are increasing in the buffer zone in Cyprus due to repeated violations in the UN-controlled area, according to Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.

Speaking to state broadcaster RIK, the minister said there has been a rise in incidents inside the buffer zone, particularly in Avlona and Pyla, where tensions have been more pronounced.

Concerns over Turkish military activity

The Defence Minister warned that Turkish forces have been attempting to gain ground within the buffer zone in Pyla, describing the situation as more serious in recent months.

He said that Turkish military activity in the area constitutes illegal actions and urged the United Nations to take stronger measures to address Cyprus buffer zone tensions.

Palmas stressed that UN peacekeepers must adopt a firmer stance and hold Turkey accountable for repeated violations.

He noted that while the UN has intervened in some cases, the current level of enforcement is insufficient to prevent further escalation in Cyprus buffer zone tensions.

Warning over potential escalation

The Defence Minister also warned that continued provocations could lead to serious incidents in the future, including the risk of injuries or fatalities.

He urged international authorities to act decisively to prevent further deterioration of stability in the buffer zone.
