Referee attack: Parliamentary candidate placed in three-day detention

A 38-year-old parliamentary candidate was placed in three-day detention on Sunday by the Larnaca District Court, as a suspect in a violent incident at a football match on Saturday night.

According to Police, shortly before the end of the match between Rotsidis Mammari and APOΠ, an unknown individual threw a plastic bottle that struck the assistant referee.

At the same time, a second individual entered the pitch and attacked him, punching him.

Following the incident, the match was interrupted, and the assistant referee was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where he underwent medical examinations and was later discharged.

As part of the investigation, “the individual who allegedly attacked the assistant referee has been identified.”

He is a 38-year-old man from Limassol, who was arrested under a court warrant and taken into custody.

According to reports, he is also one of the figures involved in livestock farmers’ protests over foot-and-mouth disease in Rizoelia.
