SupportCY deploys drones for fire prevention

Date:

The use of drones is being expanded as SupportCY, an initiative of the Bank of Cyprus, strengthens its operational capabilities in cooperation with the Fire Service.

According to an official announcement, unmanned aerial vehicles have now been deployed to support fire prevention and early detection across vulnerable areas of the island.

New drone unit enhances monitoring capacity

The integration of drones forms part of a broader risk management and operational readiness strategy.

Through scheduled and coordinated patrols, the drones can identify fire outbreaks early and provide immediate alerts to authorities, improving response times.

SupportCY confirmed that its Volunteer Corps established a dedicated Drone Unit in early 2026, equipped with modern technology, certified operators and the ability to transmit real-time images from across Cyprus.

At the same time, SupportCY is completing training programmes for both new and existing volunteers in fire prevention, response and recovery. These efforts are being carried out in cooperation with relevant state services, particularly the Fire Service.

The organisation has already conducted four local and two nationwide readiness exercises involving all volunteer units, further strengthening coordination.

The initiative also includes a newly established Helicopter Support Unit, which uses specialised inflatable water tanks to assist firefighting helicopters with refuelling during operations.

Officials say the combined use of aerial support systems and drones significantly enhances overall firefighting capacity.

Call for coordinated national effort

SupportCY head Marios Stavrou said preparations are being intensified ahead of what is expected to be a challenging fire season.

He stressed that all actions follow strict safety and European quality standards for equipment and personnel.

“The creation of the Drone Unit aims to further strengthen prevention efforts in cooperation with the Fire Service,” he said.

Stavrou added that cooperation between state authorities, volunteers, local government and other stakeholders remains essential to effectively protect Cyprus from wildfires.
