Reactions in occupied Nicosia over graphic images of attack on woman

Date:

The publication of graphic images linked to an attack against a young woman at a supermarket in occupied Nicosia has been condemned by the Turkish Cypriot Journalists’ Union, while the Communal Democracy Party (TDP) has called for immediate measures to prevent violence against women.

In a statement, the union expressed concern over the rapid spread of images showing the seriously injured woman through news websites and social media accounts.

Media urged to respect dignity

The journalists’ union said journalism is not about publishing every detail without ethical consideration, but about informing the public while respecting human dignity and the public interest.

It called on media outlets and websites to remove the material, stressing that press freedom cannot be interpreted as the freedom to violate a person’s dignity.

Calls for stronger protection measures

The TDP’s gender equality committee said preventing violence against women is a fundamental responsibility.

It argued that no government can claim success in security and justice if women do not feel safe in public spaces.

The party called for the immediate implementation of domestic violence legislation, the creation of an effective protection mechanism and the introduction of gender equality education.

It also rejected attempts to target migrants, stating that “violence against women has no nationality”.
