Nicosia Polyclinic cleared as source of Legionella exposure

Date:

Nicosia Polyclinic says it was not the source of exposure and infection in a newborn diagnosed with Legionella, following the completion of laboratory identification tests and an investigation by the relevant authorities.

In a statement on the final laboratory and epidemiological findings, the clinic said that the results from its water supply network showed no epidemiological link to the specific case.

“The available evidence indicates that the patient’s exposure took place in an environment outside the hospital,” it said.

Legionella detected at two points in water network

The clinic acknowledged that initial tests detected traces of the bacterium Legionella pneumophila at two remote points in its water supply network.

However, according to the assessment of the findings, these locations did not constitute a route of exposure for the newborn or any other patient.

Water system disinfected and tested

During the temporary suspension of operations, the clinic said it successfully completed the remediation of its water supply network and carried out comprehensive thermal and chemical disinfection of the system.

Specialised microbial-retention filters were also installed at all water outlets, followed by repeat laboratory tests.

According to the clinic, the tests confirmed that no detectable Legionella was present in the samples examined, establishing that the facilities met the required health and safety standards.

Nicosia Polyclinic assured the public that it remains committed to strictly following international standards for healthcare safety and public health protection.

It also wished the newborn a speedy and full recovery and thanked the relevant authorities for their prompt response and constructive scientific cooperation.
