Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Shipping is investigating the incident involving the Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel M/V GFS Galaxy, which came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
He confirmed that no Cypriot nationals were among the vessel’s crew.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a maritime security service operating under the UK Ministry of Defence, the M/V GFS Galaxy was struck by Iranian fire while sailing approximately nine nautical miles east of the Musandam Peninsula.
Commenting on the incident, Letymbiotis said the Deputy Ministry of Shipping is in contact with the vessel’s management company and is taking all appropriate actions while closely monitoring developments.
He added that all crew members have been safely evacuated to a neighbouring country, with the exception of one crew member who remains missing.
Letymbiotis reiterated that none of the crew members are Cypriot citizens.
He also noted that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is currently extremely challenging for all vessels, regardless of their flag, particularly in light of the military operations that took place overnight.
