Pentakomo waste facility: Rescue operation and criminal investigation underway

Date:

Since 19 December 2023, when the Water Development Department assumed responsibility for managing the Pentakomo Integrated Waste Management Facility (OEΔA), its priority has been preventing what officials describe as an unprecedented public health crisis in the Limassol district.

According to the department, the facility was handed over by the previous contractor in a state of severe disarray. Since then, the department has effectively been operating in “firefighting mode”, focusing on addressing the site’s immediate operational needs.

The long-term objective remains the award of a new tender by 2027, allowing a new contractor to undertake a partial upgrade of the facility and assume responsibility for its operation in the years ahead.

At the same time, the Legal Service is focusing on what went wrong in the past.

In recent statements, Attorney General George Savvides confirmed that the findings of the Investigative Committee into the Pentakomo facility, which were received and examined by the Legal Service at the end of 2023, have been forwarded to the Police.

Police are currently conducting a criminal investigation to determine whether any offences were committed in relation to the planning, tendering and management of the facility.

The Legal Service is awaiting the completion of the police investigation before carrying out its final legal assessment.

The Limassol District Local Government Organisation, affected municipalities and communities, as well as the wider public, are awaiting both the environmental restoration of the facility and full accountability through the criminal justice process.
