19-year-old arrested after police officer injured during chase

Date:

A 19-year-old has been arrested to assist police with investigations into an incident in Limassol on 9 July that resulted in a police officer being slightly injured.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:30pm when a member of the Limassol Traffic Police motorcycle unit signalled the driver of a pickup truck, which was not displaying registration plates, to stop for inspection.

Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated, allegedly driving recklessly and dangerously, running a red traffic light and committing several traffic offences while attempting to evade police.

The driver later stopped at a location in Limassol before reversing into the police motorcycle that was following him, causing injuries to the officer.

In response, the officer discharged his service weapon, firing three shots at the vehicle’s tyres. Despite this, the pickup truck managed to flee the scene.

The injured officer was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where he received first aid before being discharged.

Following the collection and evaluation of evidence, investigators secured testimony against a 19-year-old suspect, and a court arrest warrant was issued.

At around 11:15pm on Friday, police officers located the suspect near a pickup truck parked outside his residence in Limassol. Upon seeing the officers, he attempted to escape but was intercepted and arrested under the outstanding warrant.

The suspect was taken to the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department, where he remains in custody.

He is being investigated on suspicion of reckless and dangerous driving, failing to stop when instructed by a police officer, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and other related offences.

The pickup truck was seized as evidence, while the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department continues its inquiries.
