The Prison Warders Branch of the Pancyprian Union ISOTITA has urged the state to immediately plan and build a new prison facility that meets European standards for both staff working conditions and inmate living conditions.
In a statement, the union said:
“The situation at the Department of Prisons has reached breaking point. The problems we face are long-standing and require urgent, substantive solutions to protect the safety and dignity of both staff and inmates.”
The union clarified that the call is not about salaries or benefits, but about safeguarding the physical safety of officers and ensuring basic conditions to carry out their duties.
Only solution: a brand-new prison
“The only sustainable way to finally address the system’s deep-rooted problems is the construction of a new correctional institution. The current complex has reached the end of its lifespan and can no longer be fixed with patchwork improvements.”
