Prison scandal: Inmate transported to apartment for sexual encounters

Date:

A new scandal centred on the Central Prisons shocks Cypriot society and draws reactions from all sides.

A convicted inmate confessed to authorities that officials transported her multiple times in the past to an apartment owned by a female prison official for sexual encounters. They used an official vehicle for the trips.

The inmate, who claimed favourable treatment at the facility, now resides in police custody.

She gave her testimony during the investigation into the leak of thousands of confidential Central Prisons documents, according to Alpha station, which broke the story.

Officials deny knowledge

Lawyers for former Prisons Director Anna Aristotelous and former senior official Athena Demetriou issued a statement, even though the women were not named in the report.

Anna Aristotelous never learned of such an incident during her time as director of the Central Prisons. She would never have allowed it to happen if she had known, her lawyers stated.

Athena Demetriou’s lawyers said she reported serious corruption incidents at the highest level in 2022. Since then, she has faced retaliation. The new revelations involve baseless claims investigated by an Independent Penal Investigator in 2022.

The fresh disclosures around the Central Prisons spark a wave of political reactions.

They also raise alarms about the prison buildings. Officials describe the outdated infrastructure as failing to ensure safety.
