President pushes for World Cup in Cyprus – reveals his favourite team

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides appeared in the Sigma TV studio on the afternoon of 1 July, where he watched and commented on the England vs Congo match in a relaxed sports discussion setting.

Known for his strong interest in football, Christodoulides shared personal views on international teams and Cyprus’ sporting ambitions during the broadcast.

Support for France at World Cup

During the discussion, Christodoulides said he supports France at the World Cup, linking his preference to football legend Michel Platini as well as broader European ties.

He also noted that France remains one of the favourites to win the tournament, while adding that his support is also shaped by political and European considerations.

Cyprus hosting ambitions

Christodoulides used the discussion to highlight Cyprus’ potential role in hosting international sporting events in the future.

Referring to the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, he suggested that Cyprus could explore opportunities for regional cooperation involving countries such as Greece, Israel and Egypt.

He said Cyprus should build on its geographical position to strengthen its presence in international sports hosting.

Investment in sports facilities

The President also referred to the importance of investing in sports infrastructure, using EuroBasket as an example.

He said the development of the Spyros Kyprianou stadium demonstrated that such investments are justified when countries secure major international events.

Christodoulides encouraged sports federations to pursue bids for future competitions, stressing that Cyprus can meet the required standards.

Focus on Cypriot talent

Turning to domestic football, Christodoulides said he actively supports Pafos FC and regularly attends matches.

He expressed concern over the limited presence of Cypriot players in starting line-ups, saying he feels more positive when teams include local athletes.

He added that families need to see clear prospects for young athletes, calling on the state to create the right conditions to support sporting development.
