“We will not tolerate profiteering,” President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said today regarding price increases resulting from the war in the region.
Speaking to journalists while arriving at a meeting with community authorities of the mountainous Limassol area in Pachna, and asked about the impact of the war involving Iran, particularly regarding increases in fuel and product prices, he said that authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
“Let me remind you that measures are already in place, including a zero VAT rate and subsidies on electricity,” the President noted.
“What we certainly will not allow and this is something that will also be discussed on Monday at the Cabinet meeting is any phenomena of profiteering or attempts by some to exploit this situation at the expense of consumers,” he added.
At the same time, the President said he will travel to Brussels next week, from Tuesday to Friday, where he will hold a series of contacts, including with the President of the European Commission. Issues such as livestock farming, tourism and other matters concerning Cyprus will be discussed.
He also sent a message regarding the tourism sector, noting that despite challenges in the region, Cyprus remains safe.
“At this moment the European Throwing Cup is taking place in our country, with more than 400 foreign athletes present. Cyprus is part of the region geographically. Cyprus is not part of the war,” he said.
Asked about his meeting next Wednesday in Brussels with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the President said it will take place within the framework of efforts to immediately resume talks on the Cyprus issue.
He noted that he had already sent a specific letter outlining how negotiations could restart and that discussions will be based on that proposal, as well as on messages from European officials. He also referred to a dinner on Tuesday evening with the President of the European Council António Costa, highlighting the European Union’s readiness to support efforts aimed at restarting negotiations.
