Authorities launched an operation early on Tuesday to remove unauthorised caravans and illegal structures from a beach near the Larnaca Nautical Club, following the expiry of an ultimatum issued by the Interior Minister ordering occupants to vacate the area.
The operation, carried out with police assistance, comes days after the Larnaca District Administration served notices and a final warning to individuals who had placed caravans and other structures on the beach without permission.
Caravans seized
According to the authorities, four caravans had already been seized by the morning as part of the operation.
Large boulders were also placed at the entrance to the beach to prevent large vehicles from accessing the area again.
Similar operation planned nearby
Officials said a similar operation is expected to take place on a neighbouring beach, where illegal wooden shacks had also been erected along the shoreline.
The unauthorised occupation of the public beach had sparked strong public reaction following complaints over illegal encampments, sanitation and cleanliness issues, and the obstruction of the public’s right to freely access and enjoy the coastline.
