Fire breaks out near Nicosia industrial area as aircraft join firefighting effort

Date:

A wildfire has broken out north-west of the Ergates Industrial Area in Nicosia, prompting a large-scale response from ground crews and aerial firefighting units.

According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the blaze is burning through dry grass, wild vegetation, and reed beds within a riverbed.

Four fully staffed fire engines from Nicosia fire stations were initially dispatched to the scene, while additional support has been provided by the Department of Forests, the Game and Fauna Service, and organised volunteer groups.

The District Administration has also deployed two bulldozers and a water tanker to assist with firefighting operations.

Two firefighting aircraft are already involved in tackling the blaze, while authorities have activated two additional aircraft to reinforce the aerial response as efforts to contain the fire continue.
