Atlantis returned to Earth for the final time
On this day in 2011, the U.S. space shuttle program came to an end when Atlantis landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, completing the 135th and final mission of the shuttle era.
Atlantis touched down at 5.57am local time on 21 July after spending nearly 13 days in space on mission STS-135. Its arrival brought NASA’s 30-year shuttle programme to a close and marked the final flight of a spacecraft that had transformed human activity in low Earth orbit.
The four-person crew consisted of commander Chris Ferguson, pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim. Atlantis had launched on 8 July, carrying supplies, spare parts and equipment to the International Space Station.
After completing 200 orbits of Earth and travelling more than 5.2 million miles during its final mission, the orbiter emerged from the darkness above Florida and rolled to a stop on Runway 15.
“Mission complete, Houston,” Ferguson told flight controllers after landing. The moment ended one of the most recognisable chapters in the history of space exploration.
Three decades of shuttle missions
The first space shuttle mission began on 12 April 1981, when Columbia launched with astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen aboard.
Unlike the capsules used during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programmes, the shuttle was designed as a partly reusable spacecraft. Its winged orbiter launched vertically like a rocket, operated in space and returned to Earth by gliding onto a runway.
Five orbiters flew operational missions during the space shuttle program: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.
Across 135 missions, the fleet carried astronauts and cargo into orbit, deployed and repaired satellites, conducted scientific experiments and played a central role in assembling the International Space Station. NASA says 355 people from 16 countries travelled aboard the shuttles, while the fleet covered more than 542 million miles and hosted over 2,000 experiments.
Among its most celebrated achievements was the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. Shuttle crews later returned to repair and upgrade the observatory, extending its scientific life and enabling it to produce some of the most important astronomical observations of the modern era.
The shuttles also supported cooperation with Russia’s Mir space station before becoming essential to the construction and maintenance of the International Space Station.
Triumph accompanied by tragedy
The shuttle era was also marked by two catastrophic accidents that killed 14 astronauts.
Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch on 28 January 1986, killing all seven crew members. The disaster led to a suspension of shuttle flights and major changes to NASA’s engineering and decision-making procedures.
On 1 February 2003, Columbia disintegrated while returning to Earth following mission STS-107. All seven astronauts aboard were killed. Investigators found that foam shed from the external fuel tank during launch had damaged the orbiter’s heat shield.
Both disasters exposed the risks and technical complexity of a system that had once been promoted as a routine means of reaching space. They also shaped NASA’s safety culture and contributed to the eventual decision to retire the ageing fleet.
The gap after Atlantis
The final Atlantis landing did not end American human spaceflight, but it did leave the United States without its own means of launching astronauts into orbit.
For almost nine years, NASA relied on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft to transport American astronauts to and from the International Space Station. That dependence ended in 2020 when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon began carrying crews from US soil.
The shuttle’s retirement also reflected a change in NASA’s priorities. Rather than maintaining a complex vehicle designed mainly for low Earth orbit, the agency began developing new spacecraft and working with private companies for routine missions to the space station.
From the shuttle era to Artemis
NASA’s Artemis programme has since shifted the focus of human exploration beyond low Earth orbit and back towards the Moon.
That new generation of missions does not diminish the significance of the shuttle’s final landing. Artemis uses different spacecraft, rockets and mission architecture, and is intended to support long-term lunar exploration and preparations for eventual missions to Mars.
The shuttle was built primarily to transport crews, laboratories, satellites and heavy components into Earth orbit. Artemis is designed to carry astronauts into deep space.
In April 2026, Artemis II completed the first crewed lunar flyby of the programme, demonstrating how far NASA’s human spaceflight ambitions have moved beyond the shuttle’s original role.
Even so, much of the infrastructure, expertise and international cooperation supporting modern spaceflight was developed during the space shuttle program.
When Atlantis stopped on the runway on 21 July 2011, it was not simply the retirement of one spacecraft. It was the conclusion of a 30-year experiment in reusable human spaceflight and the end of an era that had reshaped what people could build, repair and study beyond Earth.
