Turkey pushes forward with pipeline plans

Plans for a pipeline to occupied Cyprus are moving ahead, according to Alparslan Bayraktar.

The Turkish minister said state company BOTAŞ is carrying out the engineering study for the project, with energy interconnection forming a key objective.

He also expressed the intention for natural gas to be channelled toward Turkey through a unified flow system.

Reference to nuclear cooperation

Bayraktar also referred to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, noting that financing has already been secured for the first and second reactors, highlighting ongoing cooperation with Russia.

Cyprus responds on legal basis

Responding to the statements, Nikos Christodoulides stressed that the Republic of Cyprus continues its energy planning based on international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

He underlined that there is strong interest from companies in securing new exploration blocks within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

Major energy companies involved

Energy plans are progressing with the participation of major firms such as Chevron, Eni, and TotalEnergies.

Geopolitical developments reshape energy role

The president highlighted the impact of geopolitical developments, noting that both the war in Ukraine and instability in the wider region have reinforced the Eastern Mediterranean’s role as an alternative energy corridor for Europe.

He described the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine as a major energy shock for Europe, with ongoing developments continuing to affect the region.

Licensing discussions ongoing

Asked about a potential new licensing round, the president said discussions are ongoing, calling for patience until official announcements are made.
