The Cyprus Army Officers Association has responded to the Kalo Chorio fire, expressing deep sorrow over the incident and solidarity with all those affected.
In a statement, the association stressed that protecting human life, citizens’ property and the natural environment remains the highest priority.
Investigation needed before assigning blame
The association said the National Guard is the largest organisation of the Republic of Cyprus, with thousands of personnel and soldiers carrying out daily operational and training activities involving high risks.
These activities include live-fire exercises, artillery and tank firing, explosives training and ammunition disposal. According to the association, all activities are conducted under strict procedures and safety protocols aimed at maintaining operational readiness while protecting personnel and civilians.
The association stressed that a full investigation into the Kalo Chorio fire is necessary, noting that the incident occurred during a scheduled international military training activity involving operational factors not widely known to the public.
It added that responsibility should be determined through the investigation process and not assumed beforehand, with conclusions based solely on findings and factual evidence.
Calls for improved military infrastructure
The association pointed out that Cyprus’ limited geographical size means military training areas are restricted, with many firing ranges located close to residential areas or forests.
This, it said, makes planning and safely conducting military exercises more challenging.
The association expressed hope that the state would use lessons from the incident to upgrade infrastructure, equipment and safety measures.
Among its proposals are the creation of a modern enclosed firing range for direct-fire weapons, as well as specialised facilities for explosives training and safe ammunition disposal.
Thanks to emergency responders
The association also criticised what it described as the easy targeting of National Guard personnel and the public undermining of their work, arguing that the focus should remain on improving safety and preventing similar incidents.
It thanked all those involved in fighting the blaze, including National Guard Air Unit crews, military personnel operating on the ground, the Fire Service, the Forestry Department, Civil Defence, state services, volunteers and residents.
The association said cooperation and coordination among all involved played a key role in containing and extinguishing the Kalo Chorio fire.
