A fire investigation has begun to establish the exact circumstances that led to Monday’s wildfire at the Kalo Chorio firing range, which later spread to the surrounding area.
Speaking to CNA, Ministry of Defence spokesperson Major Sofianos Philippides said the investigation is already in progress and is expected to be completed in around 10 days.
Findings expected within 10 days
“Today, the investigation is underway,” Philippides said, adding that investigators are expected to complete their work within approximately 10 days.
He noted that the National Guard takes all necessary precautionary measures depending on the activity being carried out.
Inquiry to identify any weaknesses
Referring to Monday’s incident, Philippides said the investigation will determine whether there were any shortcomings or weaknesses that need to be addressed to improve procedures.
He added that the wildfire broke out following National Guard activities at the Kalo Chorio firing range.
Defence Minister ordered immediate investigation
Philippides recalled that Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas addressed the incident shortly after the wildfire and immediately instructed that an investigation be launched to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
The findings are expected to help determine whether further measures are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
