Pissouri wildfire: Homes at risk as cigarette butt suspected

Date:

Authorities are investigating the cause of a wildfire at Pissouri that broke out shortly before 3pm on Sunday, triggering a major firefighting response.

Initial evidence suggests the fire may have started at the edge of the motorway.

Speaking to state radio, Fire Service communications officer Kyriaki Mesariti did not rule out the possibility that the blaze was once again caused by a discarded cigarette.

She urged the public to exercise caution amid the high temperatures, stressing that a careless act can easily put lives at risk and cause extensive property damage.

Four hectares burned

According to the Fire Service, the Pissouri wildfire burned four hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, piles of rubbish and waste materials in a ravine, as well as a number of trees.

The fire was brought fully under control at 7:05pm.

Eight fire engines from Limassol fire stations took part in the operation. Several isolated homes were at risk but were protected by firefighters.

Multiple agencies joined response

The Fire Service was supported by the British Bases, the Department of Forests, Civil Defence, the Game and Fauna Service, the Limassol District Administration, the Pissouri Community Council and volunteer groups.

Police temporarily closed part of the motorway during the firefighting operation. The section was reopened once conditions were deemed safe for passing drivers.

Five firefighting aircraft also carried out repeated water drops before being released after the fire was brought under control.

Fire crews remained at the scene throughout the night to complete the final extinguishing operation and deal with any possible flare-ups.
