Phedonos denies charges – Five-day hearing set for July 27

Date:

The trial involving suspended Mayor Phedonas Phedonos continued before the Permanent Criminal Court of Paphos, where he entered a plea of not guilty to five charges he is facing.

During the proceedings, the accused responded with a denial to all five charges presented against him.

The case has now been scheduled for a five-day hearing, set to take place from 27 to 31 July at 9:00 am.

Application for closed-door hearing

At today’s session, the representative of the Prosecution, Irene Savva, submitted a request for the proceedings to be held behind closed doors, citing the need to protect the alleged victim.

She argued that victims of such offences are protected under specific legislation relating to the safeguarding of witnesses and victims, particularly in cases involving violence against women. She also referred to provisions of the Witness Protection Law.

A written three-page submission was filed before the court in support of the application.

Court weighs legal balance

The President of the Criminal Court, Judge Lia Markou, clarified that at this stage the court must decide whether the plea will be entered in open court or behind closed doors.

She noted that the right to a public hearing is constitutionally protected, as every person is entitled to have their case heard publicly. However, she stressed that this right is not absolute and must be balanced against competing legal interests to ensure a fair trial.

The judge further stated that, at this stage, if the name of the complainant is not mentioned and only the alleged offences are referenced, her identity is not revealed. She also instructed that any reference to the complainant in the indictment must avoid naming her directly.

The court will now hear arguments from both sides on whether the trial proceedings should continue in public or in camera.

Five charges outlined

According to the indictment, the accused faces five charges: rape, indecent assault against a woman, indecent assault against a woman by another act, assault causing actual bodily harm, and administering a substance capable of stupefying or overcoming resistance.

The case is now set to proceed to a full hearing later in July.
