Parliament wraps up with 101 bills on the agenda

Date:

With an extensive agenda featuring 101 bills up for approval, the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives is convening at 11 a.m. today for its final meeting before the summer recess.

The session — expected to last many hours — will cover several high-profile issues, with one of the most significant being the abolition of multiple pensions for state officials.

Among other key decisions, MPs will also vote on a widely discussed bill allowing the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology to offer academic programmes in languages other than the official languages of the Republic.

A bill aimed at modernising the legal framework for water conservation will also be put to a vote. It includes increased fines for water wastage, broader restrictions on hosepipe use, and strengthened inspection mechanisms.

Notably, several bills concern judicial reform, including the creation of a new Administrative Court of Appeal and the separation of the supreme judicial authority into two bodies: a Constitutional Court and a Supreme Court.

A bill aimed at aligning Cyprus with the Schengen acquis is also expected to be voted on.

The creation of a National Sanctions Implementation Unit within the Ministry of Finance is also on the table, along with the approval of budgets for the District Self-Government Organisations and amendments linked to the local government reform.

Parliament will also vote on a bill regulating public assemblies and parades, introducing a new legal framework to safeguard the right to peaceful assembly through clear procedures and rules for organising and monitoring such events.

Another matter to be addressed involves the allocation of Turkish Cypriot properties to displaced Greek Cypriots.

In addition, a harmonisation bill will be debated, providing for the inclusion of buildings and road transport in the emissions trading system starting from 1 January 2027.

The agenda also includes numerous other issues related to benefits, administrative fines, and compliance with the EU acquis across various sectors.
