A large Paphos wildfire is burning near Galataria village, with strong winds complicating firefighting efforts. Ground crews and aircraft have been deployed to contain the blaze.
The fire broke out shortly after noon on Monday in dry grass and wild vegetation south of the Galataria community in the district of Paphos. According to the Fire Service, strong winds in the area have fuelled the spread of the flames.
Efforts to battle the Paphos wildfire include six staffed fire trucks from the city and district of Paphos, five additional fire vehicles from the Forestry Department, and three earth-moving machines. Aerial support has also been mobilised.
Four firefighting aircraft responded immediately, as they were already patrolling the area. They carried out initial water drops and returned for further refills, continuing their rotations throughout the afternoon. Authorities are monitoring wind conditions closely, which remain a critical factor in the operation.
So far, no injuries or damage to homes have been reported. However, the rough terrain and shifting winds are making containment difficult. Fire crews remain on high alert as the situation evolves.
Wildfires are a recurring threat during Cyprus’ hot, dry summers. Authorities urge the public to avoid open flames and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
The Paphos wildfire is the latest in a series of blazes affecting rural parts of the island this season.
