Palestinian Ambassador: ICC arrest warrants “in the right direction”

Date:

The decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant is “in the right direction” Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Cyprus Abdallah Attari has told CNA.

In a statement to CNA commenting on the decision, the Palestinian diplomat notes, however, that the practical implementation of this decision remains crucial.

“Despite the fact that this decision was adopted with a delay, the message is clear; international justice, even belatedly, seeks to restore justice,” Attari notes.

He says that only through the substantial enforcement of the arrest warrants, a sense of justice may prevail for the Palestinian people, who are suffering for decades under occupation, due to human rights abuses and impunity.

“The International Criminal Court’s decision revealed Netanyahu’s true face, bringing to light his stance and the policies of his far-right government,” the Palestinian diplomat continues.

The Ambassador says that he expects from all countries to clearly state their commitment to comply with the ICC arrest warrants. “Cooperation with the Court is vital in order to uphold international law,” he adds.

He says moreover that “the time of impunity for the occupying state of Israel has to end” noting that the Palestinian people deserve justice and a recognition of their right to freedom and self determination. This decision is a step towards the right direction, he concludes.
