More than 90% of fires recorded annually in Cyprus are caused by human activity, the Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service, Nikos Longinos, said on Monday during the opening ceremony of Cyprus fire safety week.
The event is co-organised by the Fire Service and ERB Insurance, aiming to raise awareness, improve prevention and strengthen public education on fire risks.
Thousands of fire incidents each year
Longinos noted that the Fire Service responds to an average of around 8,500 fire-related calls annually. Of these, approximately 5,000 involve rural fires and 3,500 urban incidents.
He explained that fires are often caused by negligence, carelessness, deliberate burning or arson-related actions, underlining the importance of prevention during Cyprus fire safety week.
Prevention and public awareness at the core
The Fire Chief said the initiative represents the culmination of ongoing efforts to educate citizens on risk recognition and correct response during fire incidents.
Activities will peak on 25 April with an event at Paphos Castle, featuring demonstrations and an exhibition of firefighting vehicles and equipment.
Fire and Rescue Services of the British Bases will also participate in awareness campaigns and the main event.
Strengthening preparedness and coordination
Longinos referred to continuous training programmes for Fire Service personnel and ongoing upgrades in both human resources and equipment. He added that strong support from the Ministry ensures high readiness levels.
He also confirmed the completion of the design and construction works for a new Unified Fire Service Operations Coordination Centre, which is expected to enhance operational efficiency.
Recognition of volunteers
The contribution of volunteers was highlighted during the event, with three individuals honoured for their assistance in fire prevention and response.
These included citizens who supported firefighting efforts during major incidents, coordinated fire observation activities, and rescued residents during emergency situations.
Government and industry support
Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris emphasised that Cyprus’ small size allows for effective coordination among services, while noting the need for faster response times and improved cooperation.
He stressed that prevention is no longer optional but a national necessity, especially as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires.
ERB Insurance CEO Takis Feidias said Cyprus fire safety week addresses a real social need, aiming to build a safer and more informed society.
The company also donated two fire simulation training systems worth €40,000 to the Fire Service, further supporting training and preparedness efforts.
